Anonymous said: What is 50 shades of grey about? And what's so bad about it?

50 Shades of Grey was originally fanfiction based on the Twilight series, which was then published as a novel (along with 2 subsequent books). It sold over 100 million copies around the world and topped best-seller lists everywhere. It’s about to be adapted into a film, set to come out early next year.

It follows a college student named Ana Steele, who enters a relationship with a man named Christian Grey and is then introduced to a bastardised and abusive parody of BDSM culture.

While the book is paraded as erotica, the relationship between Ana and Christian is far from healthy. The core mantra of the BDSM community is “safe, sane and consensual”, and 50 Shades is anything but. None of the rules of BDSM practices (which are put in place to protect those involved) are actually upheld. Christian is controlling, manipulative, abusive, takes complete advantage of Ana, ignores safe-words, ignores consent, keeps her uneducated about the sexual practices they’re taking part in, and a multitude of other terrible things. Their relationship is completely sickening and unhealthy.

Basically, “the book is a glaring glamorisation of violence against women,” as Amy Bonomi so perfectly put it.

It’s terrible enough that a book like this has been absorbed by people worldwide. Now, we have a film that is expected to be a huge box-office success, and will likely convince countless more young women that it’s okay not to have any autonomy in a relationship, that a man is allowed to control them entirely. It will also show many young men that women are theirs to play with and dominate, thus contributing to antiquated patriarchal values and rape culture.

Boycott this fucking movie, for the love of god. These kinds of ideas are dangerous and set us back as a society

I don’t agree with you there, ok maybe its different from traditional bdsm culture however you’re making ana out to be completely not in consent of the whole thing, Ana is completely aware of the arrangement and christian even asks her to sign a form to tell him what she likes and doesnt like, if you read the books ana is also the one pushing christian to try new things and they also do have safewords, I dont understand how consensual sex is a sign of rape culture?! Christian however can be controlling and over the top however not for one minute is this shown as being normal, from the start its obvious that he has problems and the book continues to explain what these are and these problems cause himself and Ana to have a lot of arguments, Ana can look after herself she isnt defenseless she’s strong minded and likes what she likes, if she didnt enjoy her relationship with christian she wouldnt be in it, don’t boycott the movie go and see it if after you see it you disagree with me then fair enough just make your own opinion and dont follow general tumblr consensus.

Consent should always be open to negotiation at any time - a signed form in which one person makes the rules and the other has to irreversibly agree to them is the very opposite of healthy consent.

Christian ignores Ana’s safe word on various occasions and doesn’t provide after care, and a Dom that not only engages with someone so sexually inexperienced but engages in such a controlling way is an abusive Dom, and just further demonstrates Ms. James’ ingorance on BDSM.

Also, these are characters, not real people. They have no autonomy, they do only what the writer dictates, and the writer created a very abusive relationship (and having ‘a lot of problems’ is absolutely not an excuse for being abusive).

People are reading these books as a portrayal of a romantic relationship and a guide book to BDSM, when the opposite could not be more true. It also perpetuates the idea that men must be dominant and women must be submissive for sex to be ‘sexy’, which is utter bullshit. The influence this book is damaging real people. That’s the issue here.

alright you guys have posted some pretty bad jokes on here but not one comes close to this doozy

brace yourselves

so there’s a far-off place that consists of a perfectly triangular lake surrounded by land, with three kingdoms on the three sides of the lake. the first…

listening to an album for the first time is weird bc you have to give your full attention to it and you cant sing along

My friend once told me
she liked this guy because of his hands
And I found it absurd that anyone
would develop feelings over one feature,
and not care about the rest

It wasn’t until you used your hands
to cup the back of my neck the first time we kissed
and I could feel your firm grasp pull me closer,
and my insides exploded
and my head buzzed with bliss.

And the first night you slept over,
you fell asleep with your hand
laid over my stomach
and your fingers felt like a fire
that I didn’t mind burning my skin.

The first time we got drunk,
was the first time you played with my hair,
and my god I was hooked,
I’d drink forever if it meant you’d never stop.

And in public you’d hold my hand,
and rub your thumb in little circles
that left me wanting you more,
no matter what you would never let me go,
I was glued to you,
and I honestly didn’t mind

When we talked about breaking up,
you saw my lips quiver with fear,
and you brushed over my lips with your fingers
before pulling me into your lap
and you kissed me like never before.
With your hands on my hips
pulling me so close to you,
leaving no space in between us.
It was then I realized I never wanted you to go

Its now that,
I finally understand why hands
were the only feature that mattered
